Was commissioned a
flight officer upon successful completion of my twin engine training in
pilot class 44F June, 1944. On then to B24 Training as a pilot officer.
Arrived at the 8th Air Force in England as a co‑pilot on the Joseph Tully
crew, assigned to the 409th Squadron of the 93rd Bomb Group in January
1945.1 flew a total of 18 combat missions ending in April of 1945 and was
promoted to 1st Lt. and given my own crew in March of 45. In June of 1945
I flew my B24 back to Bradley Field, Connecticut and was assigned to
Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton Ohio as a project test pilot on
Bell Aircraft projects. Completed active duty in 1945 and remained in the
reserve until 1950. My civilian career spanned over 50 years in top level
executive capacities with TRW and several other Ohio companies as
President. I retired in 1995. I hold a BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering
and a Masters Degree in Business and Finance.

Paul Steichen, Jr. Joined the 93rd bomb Group when he
accompanied his father, Paul Steichen to the 1995 VE Day reunion at
Norwich ,England. He has been active in the 93rd BG since
the Memorial Library rededication in 2001. He recently took an early
retirement from Bayer Corporation in Berkeley, Ca after working in the
biotech firm for 20 years. He lives in Pittsburg, CA. with his wife,
Marissa.
Paul, Sr. became president of the 93rd BG
Association in 1993 and started the Ball of Fire Quarterly Express that
year. He was a navigator in the 409th in late 1944 - early 1945.
He became a folded wing in January, 1998. |

Born in Baltimore, Md. June 8, 1922. After the US
entered the war, I entered Military Service as an Aviation Cadet in
Pilot training. Made it through Basic Flying School at which time I
failed a test flight and washed out of the program. Shortly
thereafter I volunteered for Gunnery School and was subsequently
assigned to a B-24 crew and shipped to England. After sailing on the
original Queen Mary, was assigned to the 93rd. BG, 409th squadron.
Our crew flew 19 combat missions from January to April 1945. We flew
back to the States as a crew and returned to civilian life in November
1945. I remained in the Reserve and was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in
1948. Completed college under the GI Bill achieving several degrees
including Pre Law, BS, and Juris Doctor. I was recalled to active
duty and retired from the Air Force in June 1982 as a Colonel, 0-6.
Moved from Northern Virginia to Florida that year and since have been
involved in a number of volunteer positions with the Red Cross and
Sheriff's Department.

"Ohio”Cal completed 31 missions as a radio
operator, flying number 30 on D-Day. He took over the 93rd
newsletter “ The Ball of Fire
Quarterly Express” from it's originator, Paul Steichen, in the
summer of 1996 and continued as editor until Fall,2005. Cal was instrumental in getting the 93rd Bomb Group
website online. Cal has served as treasurer since 1996. |

Cal Stewart, a newsman by trade in pre-1941 days, continued plying
his trade in the 93rd Bomb Group as Public Relations Officer by
publishing a weekly newsletter, “Liberator.” He was later
promoted in grade to Lt. and became the personal Aide to General
Timberlake at 20th Wing Headquarters. Cal kept our beloved “Libs”
in the public eye with articles in the Stars and Stripes. After
the war, with James Dugan, he co-authored the book “Ploesti.”
He spent years in researching the men and stories of the 93rd
before authoring our superb history “Ted’s Travelling Circus.”
